What is my child learning this term?
Autumn term 2017
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to school. The children have had a great first day with their new teachers. Here is some information on our planned learning for this term including PE lessons.
Homework will go home on Thursday and will need to be brought back to school for Monday morning when it will be marked by the teacher.
Your child will also bring home a reading journal and an appropriately levelled book. They need to fill in their reading journal and bring it into school every day. Reading books are changed once children finish them.
Topic Focus – History
Our History topic will be Invaders and Settlers. During the term, we will be learning about the Celts, Romans and Vikings and why each of these came to Britain. You could do some research on these different invaders and settlers, visit a museum that contains ancient artefacts or read stories based on these different historical periods.
In the first part of the term, we will be learning to write information texts about Celts, Romans and other invaders and settlers that have come to the British Isles. We will then move on to writing diaries based on Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. After the half term break, we will be writing our own monster stories based on the ancient story of Beowulf. Finally, we will be learning to write newspaper reports about Sutton Hoo and Viking raiders.
This year, handwriting will be a major focus across the school. Children will be working from a new handwriting scheme to become fast, fluent writers.
We will continue to visit our lovely school library and will encourage children to read for pleasure as widely as possible. In Guided Reading, we will have a focus on using inference and deduction to explore subtext.
In maths, we will continue to tackle the challenging new curriculum, using our brand new maths scheme Maths No Problem – this brilliant scheme is based on the Singapore Maths method and is exceptionally thorough, hands on and fun!
In Science, initially we will be learning all about living things and the ways to classify different creatures into groups. Later in the term we will learn how to write scientifically.
The children will be taking part in indoor PE lessons on the following days:
Nickleby – Tuesday
Copperfield – Thursday
In addition, Nickleby and Copperfield will be going Swimming on Fridays. Children will need to bring a swimming costume, towel and swimming hat. Nickleby class will be leaving school at 8:45 so will need to be in school before then.
In Computing the children will be learning about e-safety before moving on to design their own games.
The children will be working with our resident artists on producing sketched and sculptures linked to our history topic.
We will continue to work on RULER to help the children understand their feelings.
