Year 5/6 News

Fri 12 May 2017

Phew! What a week it has been, especially in Year 6. But could Year 6’s week be described as newsletterworthy? I’m not sure. The children spent most of the week cooped up and hunched over this year’s SATs papers in reading, spelling, grammar and maths (maths is three separate exam papers over two days!).

Every day the Year 6 cohort leapt out of bed extra-early and skipped into school for 8.30am. Biscuits were munched, squash was slurped and revision was revised, before the children trooped bravely into various rooms throughout the school to complete their tests. Whatever the outcome, every single child did brilliantly: they held their nerve, gritted their teeth, looked the Statutory Assessment Test monster in the eye and said, ‘You’re for it, buster’.

Then, on Friday, after all the exams were done and dusted, the children were released into a nearby park to frolic like giddy foals fresh out of the stable, which was great fun – a mass unfurrowing of the brow and relaxation of the collective brain took place, as well as some football and general charging about.

Year 5 is quite a different story – they have been busily creating their own Greek myths based on Theseus and the Minotaur. Omar in Summerson designed a spectacular mythical beast, as did many of the children. In terms of classical creature creation, Yr 5 have certainly given the Greek gods a run for their money. The children will now be penning their own myths with their own heroes taking on the beasts, all under the watchful eye of the gods they have also created. These children are classicists in the making!

The highlight of the week for Year 5 was the trip to Pizza Express, where the children planned, prepped and cooked their own pizzas from scratch. I’ll let the words of Mr.Kittoe paint the picture:

“Wednesday morning was a break in the regular routine, as Y5 were treated to a special class by pizzaiolo Paulo at Royal Festival Hall Pizza Express, after which it was Margheritas all round for a sunny lunch on the grass of Jubilee Gardens. In the restaurant, from where I was working, Renée’s pizza stood out as immaculately prepared, and I noticed that Joel had been particularly adept at twirling around that stretchy dough – however, when it came to the actual proof of the pudding, the eating was most satisfactory all round.”

I think you could safely ask your son or daughter to make you lunch this weekend.

Year 5/6 News

Fri 19 May 2017

As the SATS become a distant memory (thanks for reminding us!), Year 6 have embarked on their end of year show: Hansel and Gretel. This week we had the wonderful Pete Letanka (musical genius) back in school to help us get started on the songs for the show. So far, we have a line dance, a spot of punk inspired madness and some seriously high harmonies. The show should be quite unusual – it’s a surreal script with talking rabbits, rapping chickens, mechanical devices and a truly evil witch or, in this case, multiple witches. The show will take place on the 30th of June in the Top Hall and is sure to be an extravaganza!

Meanwhile, in the universe of Year 5 there was a thought-provoking visit from a member of Growing Against Violence, talking about gangs and how young people can protect themselves in their communities and online. The children were very engaged and had lots of thoughtful contributions to make to the discussions. While some of the content was hard-hitting, the children dealt with it maturely and were able to recognise the importance of avoiding gangs as they grow up.

In English, the children have continued to write their own Greek Myths – Justin produced a fantastically descriptive piece of writing contain the phrase ‘empty darkness stalked the land’ – which was haunting. Also, Craig wrote a lovely character description of his Greek hero, who sounded remarkably like Craig himself!
In maths, the children have been enthusiastically estimating the size of various Premier League football grounds – Christian and Teddie, in Barnaby, were particularly keen and successful in there calculations.
The highlight of the week for Barnaby, and the whole school, was Barnaby Class’s excellent Ancient Greek themed assembly! Charles Dickens was under attack from a host of Greek monsters, sent to get revenge on the school by Ariadne and Calista (Amina and Olivia) but luckily Ms Buchanan (Riham) recruited a band of heroes to save the day. Just in time, Chronos (Joel) turned up to adjudicate a spelling bee and a shape quiz which decided the fate of the school.

A special mention must also go to Precious’s amazing Medusa outfit and to Toni’s cameo as little-known Greek beast Octodeath!

Year 5/6 News

Thu 25 May 2017

On Monday, Summerson class (year 5) had the fantastic opportunity to visit Rambert Dance’s head office and rehearsal space on the Southbank. The purpose of the day was to learn about careers in the creative arts and to have a go at some of the exciting jobs in the dance company. The children got to design sets, costumes, masks and props, as well as choreograph their own dance pieces inspired by the theme ‘Future and Space’. It was an amazing day and the children produced some incredible designs and dances. Omar and Gabriela particularly impressed with their enthusiasm and attitude to the day.

Down the hall in the denizens of Year 6, the children have been given their parts in the year 6 show. We’ve made a huge effort to cast the show as fairly as possible, giving every child a part equal to that which they asked for. All the main parts have been split up into sections, to give numerous children a turn. Those children who are playing smaller parts in the show will be taking a larger role in the backstage design elements: set, costume and lighting. Others are playing in the band. We’ve been practicing the songs for the show all week, and they’re really shaping up. After half term, the acting commences – so it’s time to get learning your lines!

Both year 5 and 6 have been exploring Greek mathematics this week: they’ve looked at the Golden Ratio, investigated the digits of Pi and tackled some ferocious logic problems. Esteban in Micawber was very keen on The Golden Ratio as he could finally claim to have a mathematically handsome face! Heba and Kehinde presented their investigation into Pi very efficiently too. In Barnaby, Elizabeth enjoyed learning about logic and showed a natural aptitude; Yusef was brilliantly accurate in finding the golden ratio and was consumed by the beauty and poetic perfection of it all!

In English, Year 6 have been writing in role as Ariadne – the jilted bride of Theseus. The children have loved describing her angst at being dumped on a distant Mediterranean Island. We’ve had some exceptional figurative writing in Micawber Class – Ruby described the sea as ‘a host of glistening sapphires’.

What a beautiful metaphor! And on that note, may your half-term break also resemble a host of glistening sapphires.
